Queering the Tarot // Gender and the Court Cards

October 15th 6:30 - 9:30pm

Max participants: 25 people

Location: Toast Collective

Sliding Scale $20 - $50

This is a 3 hour workshop to explore tarot theory on all 16 court cards from a gender neutral, non-hierarchical approach and includes a zine to take home.  We will begin by building an altar to our queer ancestors and folks are welcome to bring an item to place on the altar.  This is a scent-aware space, please refrain from bringing incense, plant bundles for smoke cleansing, wearing essential oils etc.  Bringing a tarot deck is not required to participate but does enhance the learning experience.  If you're looking for indie and/or queer friendly decks, my favourite shop is Little Red Tarot.

If you're curious about my folk tarot practice, feel free to explore my website and email me any questions at tess@thecitywitch.ca

Intro To Folk Tarot //  A Beginners Workshop on Tarot Framework

October 17th 6:30 - 8:30 PDT (first quarter moon in capricorn)

Max Participants: 10

Location: Private Residence (exact address included in registration confirmation email)

Sliding Scale: $30 - $50

This is an intimate two hour theory workshop to introduce the framework of folk tarot. Folk tarot is Tess Giberson’s personal verbage to describe their gender-nonconforming non-hierarchical approach to tarot. Folk tarot is a practice of reading tarot that values autonomy, collective power, joy, liberation, mutual evolution, and interdependence. Folk tarot is influenced by the work of authors such as adrienne maree brown, Silvia Federici, and Baruch Spinoza. Folk tarot evolved during Tess’s studies under tarot reader Lindsay Mack and tarotist Olivia Ephraim Pepper. Inspired by healing ancestral wounds and intergenerational trauma, Tess began describing their tarot practice as “folk” tarot to honour the divination traditions of their ancestors who believed magic (rather than sin) was our birthright. This workshop includes a zine as a handout and if requested, can be taught with ASL interpretation. There is also allotted time at the end of the workshop for a Q+A. Please note that this workshop takes places in a private residence and therefore is not scent-free. The residence is located in the west end, and the exact address will be listed in your registration confirmation email. To note accessibility, the residence has one set of steps to the entrance and is home to two cats and one dog (who will not be present for the circle unless requested).

Sacred Space // Tarot Circle

Tuesday October 16th 6:30pm – 9pm

First Quarter Moon in Capricorn

Co-facilitated by Stacey Coplin and Tess Giberson

Max Participants: 8

Location: Private Residence (West End)

Cost: sliding scale $40 - 60

Tarot circles are a form of collectively reading tarot. We each come to a tarot circle with an individual intention we want to set for our reading, build an altar with objects that symbolize our intention, and channel this energy as a group to express our individual intentions collectively. After building an altar we form a circle, holding hands to meditate on and amplify the energy we’re raising together. Each person takes a turn sitting in the middle of the circle to receive a reading, first stating their intention or question so we can focus on it as a group (similar to a healing circle). Both the receiver and facilitator shuffle, then the facilitators pull cards and reads for the receiver. After the facilitator is done reading, those in the circle can share their intuitive hits, energetic downloads, and thoughts about the spread. Tarot circles are wonderful ways of creating a sacred space, and allow for a layered and complex depth of intuitive exploration of a reading. Please note that this circle takes place in a private residence and will not be scent-free. The residence is located in the west end, and the exact address will be listed in your registration confirmation email. To note accessibility, the residence has one set of steps to the entrance and is home to two cats and one dog (who will not be present for the circle unless requested).
